Marc Chagall[a] (born Moishe Shagal; 6 July&#;[O.S. 24 June]&#; – 28 March [b]) was a Russian and French artist.[c] An early modernist, he was associated with the École de Paris, as well as several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints.
Chagall was born in , into a Jewish family near Vitebsk, today in Belarus, but at that time in the Pale of Settlement of the Russian Empire. Before World War I, he travelled between Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. During that period, he created his own mixture and style of modern art, based on his ideas of Eastern European and Jewish folklore. Biography
Marc Chagall was born on July 7 in Vitebsk, a provincial town in the vast Russian Empire, located in present-day Belarus. Moyshe Segal—his real name—was born into a modest Jewish family. He was the first of nine children (seven girls and two boys). His mother, Feïga-Ita Tchernina, sold groceries from the ground floor of their house on Pokrovskaïa street. His father, Khatskel Segal, worked as a herring pickler at a warehouse on the bank of the Dvina River in Jachnine.

Chagall attended the heder, a traditional Jewish elementary school where around ten local boys aged between three and thirteen were instructed by a tutor. He looked after them and taught them prayers and Bible passages in Hebrew. Chagall also took singing and violin lessons there. He would spend his summers in Liozno, a village around 40 kilometers from Vitebsk, where he’d be surrounded by his grandparents, uncles, aunts, and various farm animals.

Starting out in Russia and discovering Paris
Marc Chagall was born in Vitebsk (Belarus, which was still an integral part of the Russian Empire) on 7th July
He was the eldest of nine children in a poor Jewish family – his father was a herring merchant.
Despite the art world being a far cry from his humble background, he was introduced to painting while going along to the studio of a local painter – Jehuda Pen - after his secondary schooling was cut short. Not long after that he met Bella, the daughter of modest jewellers, who became his fiancée and source of inspiration.
From to , he moved to Saint-Petersburg, where he enrolled in several academies before working in the studio of Léon Bakst, a set designer for the Ballets Russes. It was here that he came across the works of the Parisian Avant-Garde and began dreaming of going to Paris.
