    CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The excitement surrounding Rory McIlroy is a reminder how much the PGA Tour misses Tiger Woods. Mostly because there is no "next Tiger," despite all the strained hopes to identify a new candidate in his absence.

    Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington beg to differ. No wonder, given how McIlroy dominated this U.S. Open. Harrington even saw McDowell's Tiger comparison and raised him a Nicklaus reference, saying, "If you're going to talk about someone challenging Jack's record, [McIlroy's] your man."

    Rory McIlroy won his first major championship in June of At a time when Tiger Woods was recovering from injury and personal scandal, McIlroy was immediately embraced as The Next Big Thing. At the time, I advised caution and was roundly hooted by - well by the dozen or so people who bothered to listen to what I had to say.

    Much has happened to Rory and, for that matter, the golf world since then. At the same time, I think much of what I wrote then still holds true today. I’ll provide commentary along the way.

    I made an observation on Facebook about Rory McIlroy’s record-setting U.S. Open victory that some took to be a bit harsh (“McIlroy held up – good on him. But let’s hold off on any coronation.”). I was not being disrespectful or "grumpy"; I’ll try to explain it here.
