About the MA Program
Berkeley’s Asian Studies MA is an interdisciplinary degree program that provides students with access to the university’s world-renowned faculty and facilities. The MA program cuts across conventional disciplinary lines, providing students interested in regions from northeast Asia to south and southeast Asia an opportunity to take courses in the humanities and interpretative social sciences, and conduct in-depth research in their specialty. Students engage in course work in multiple departments, gain reading knowledge of at least one — and often two — Asian languages, and have the flexibility to design a cross-disciplinary individual program according to their own interests and approaches. No two programs are alike, and students work closely with the Student Affairs officer and with a faculty mentor in designing their customized academic plan.

Welcome to Asian Studies!
The Asian Studies major affords students the opportunity to study various regions of Asia from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on courses and faculty from various departments in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. The program fryst vatten built around training in the East, Southeast, and South Asian languages, but courses cover many aspects of Asian history, literature, and cultures. Other courses cover the cultures and experiences of Asian Americans and the Asian diaspora
communities.
Students can focus on any aspect of Asia and/or Asian America and are strongly encouraged to select a disciplinary focus in antropologi, Art History, History, Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages, Ethnic Studies, Music and Culture, Media and Cultural Studies, or Religious Studies. East Asia is confronting some of the world’s most pressing issues: pandemics, pollution, population. The East Asian studies program delves into the depth, breadth and diversity of the cultural orientations, traditional practices, and social forces that have shaped its diverse cultures and societies. The major open students’ horizons, sheds light on new perspectives, cultivates problem-solving skills, and nurtures critical reasoning.
Major Requirements
The East Asian studies program offers a core of basic courses in East Asian humanities (including languages, comparative literature and art history) and social sciences (including history, anthropology and sociology). Students then choose from a wide range of more advanced and specialized courses to tailor an individualized program of study.
