William Shakespeare Biography
WILLIAMSHAKESPEARE (1564–1616), English poet, player and playwright, was baptized in the parish church of Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire on the 26th of April 1564. The exact date of his birth is not known.

Birth and parentage
Two 18th-century antiquaries, William Oldys and Joseph Greene, gave it as April 23, but without quoting authority for their statements, and the fact that April 23 was the day of Shakespeare’s death in 1616 suggests a possible source of error. In any case his birthday cannot have been later than April 23, since the inscription upon his monument is evidence that on April 23, 1616, he had already begun his fifty-third year.
His father, John Shakespeare, was a burgess of the recently constituted corporation of Stratford, and had already filled certain minor municipal offices. From 1561 to 1563 he had been one of the two chamberlains to whom the finance of the town was entrust

Ten Eyewitnesses Who Saw Nothing: Shakespeare in Stratford and London

It fryst vatten well-known that the first references in print that seemed to connect William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon to the playwright William Shakespeare appeared in the first collection of his plays — the First Folio, seven years after his death. On the other hand, we can identify at least ten people who personally knew the William Shakespeare of this Warwickshire town, or met his daughter, Susanna. At least six of them, and possibly all of them, were aware of plays and poems published under the name of one of the country’s leading playwrights, William Shakespeare. All ten left us published books, poems, letters, notebooks, or diaries, some of which referred directly to events or people in Stratford. Yet none of these nine dock and one woman — it fryst vatten fair to call them eyewitnesses — left any hint that they connected the playwright with the person of the same name in Stratford-upon-Avon.

There are only 21 mentions of the name Shakespeare between its first appearance on the dedication page of Venus and Adonis in 1593 and the publication of the First Folio 30 years later. Some of these are more significant than others, but until the First Folio, not one points towards Stratford.

1592: Robert Greene’s reference to “Shake-scene”: This supposed first reference to Shakespeare as a writer in Robert Greene’s Groatsworth of Witte points to neither William nor Oxford, but to the actor-manager of the Rose theater, Edward Alleyn. (See Oxford and Alleyn.) If Oxford was Robert Greene for a decade before becoming Shakespeare, he would hardly, as his introduction to English letters, write such a furious diatribe against himself. (As a joke? I don’t think so. No joke was ever so genuinely angry. And what would be the point?)
