Ivan Gašparovič
President of the Slovak Republic
Born in Poltár on 27th March , President Gašparovič is married and has two adult children – Denisa and Ivo. After studying at the Comenius University Faculty of Law from to , he earned his PhD in and he was appointed Associate Professor at the very same faculty. saw Ivan Gašparovič working at the Martin District Prosecutor’s Office and subsequently at the Municipal Prosecutor’s Office in Bratislava. Between and , Ivan Gašparovič served as the Vice-Chairman of the Czechoslovak Ice Hockey Federation International Commission. He began lecturing at the Comenius University Faculty of Law, Department of Criminal Law, Criminology, and Criminalistics in He became Co-Chairman of the Independent Slovak Lawyers Forum in and the Vice-Rector of Comenius University in From to , he served as the Prosecutor General of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic in Prague. Biography[]
Ivan Gasparovic was born in Poltar, Slovak Republic in , the son of a Croatian immigrant father. He worked as a prosecutor and joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in to support Alexander Dubcek's reforms, only to be dismissed due to his support for the Prague Spring. He went on to serve as a law professor from to , and he served as President Vaclav Havel's Prosecutor-General after the Velvet Revolution. He also served in the National Council from to (including as Speaker from to ), and he was affiliated with the HZDS party and became a leading figure in Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar's authoritarian regime. In , he left to form eller gestalt the Movement for Democracy party and defeated Meciar in the presidential election.
