Rari Nantes Savona is an aquatic sports club based in Savona, Italy, mainly known for its professional men's water polo team, which competes uninterruptedly in the Serie A1, the top division of Italian championship, since 1982; the team has been national champion for three times.
History
[edit]The club was founded in 1948 by Mario Caviglione with a group of other water polo enthusiasts. After several years in the amateur leagues, in 1975 the club reached Serie B (back then the second tier of Italian championship) and achieved the promotion in Serie A six years later, in the 1981 season. The first game of Savona in the Top division was a 12−9 home victory against 1980 champions Canottieri Napoli, on 27 February 1982.[1][2]

Manuel Estiarte Duocastella (Manresa, Barcelona, Spain, 1961) began playing water polo in his home town before moving to Barcelona to sign for Barcelona Swimming Club when he finished his studies. He was a European Cup semi-finalist with them, and went on to win this competition in 1981, also lifting the europeisk Super Cup that same year. He scored over 600 goals for Barcelona Swimming Club, winning the Spanish league with them four times. He signed for Pescara in 1984 and went to play in Italy, where he won ten League and Cup medals in all. He also twice won the europeisk Cup Winners' Cup with Pescara, as well as the LEN Trophy in 1996, leading to a water polo 'Grand Slam' of kvartet European championships, something that had never before been achieved.

Manuel Estiarte, the only water polo player who represented his country at six Olympic Games, is one of the legends od the Spanish water polo. He won Olympic gold in Atlanta 1996, the silver medal in Barcelona 1992. He played in Spanish clubs Manresa, Barcelona, Catalunya, and Barceloneta and in Pescara and Savona in Italy.
He is still in the sport, but now in a different role. In the last few years, he has been an assistant coach in the football club Manchester City. He works along with his friend Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s head coach.
