    Veteran actress & theatre artist Uttara Baokar passes away at 79

    Noted actor and theatre artist Uttara Baokarpassed away at the age of 79 in Pune city of Maharashtra, following a prolonged illness, sources close to her family said. Baokar, who was ailing for the last one year, breathed her last at a hospital on Tuesday.

    Her last riteswere performed on Wednesday morning, they said. Baokar, who studied acting at the National School of Drama(NSD), played various roles in different plays, such as Padmavati in 'Mukyhamantri', Mena in 'Mena Gurjari', Desdemona in Shakespeare's 'Othello', mother in playwright Girish Karnad's 'Tughlaq', among others.

    Baokar came in the limelight following her role in Govind Nihlani's movie 'Tamas'. She also acted in SumitraBhave's feature films.     Uttara Baokar (5 August – 12 April )[1] was an Indian stage, film, and television actress. She acted in several notable plays, such as Padmavati in Mukyhamantri, Mena in Mena Gurjari, Desdemona in Shakespeare's Othello, the mother in playwright Girish Karnad's Tughlaq, the nautch girl in Chhote Saiyad Bade Saiyad, and the lead role of Umrao in Umrao Jaan.[2] In , she directed Jaywant Dalvi's play Sandhya Chhaya, translated to Hindi by Kusum Kumar.[3]

    In , she won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting (Hindi theatre).[4] She appeared in Marathi films such as Doghi () with Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Renuka Daftardar, Uttarayan (), Shevri (), and Restaurant () with Sonali Kulkarni.[5]
