Introduction
Abstract
The Introduction lays out the key transnational issues, concepts and debates that are of concern throughout both volumes of A History of East African Theatre. These include matters of form, language, theme, state intervention, training and the position of women. I discuss the need to strengthen East African theatre historiography to better engage with fundamental issues such as our definitions of what constitutes an African theatre and ideas of authenticity, tradition, modernity and the Pan-African. Throughout I show how shared elements of transnational histories have had long-term effects on national theatrical trajectories.
