The Blackman family and Media 21 have collaborated to celebrate the life and legacy of a national icon, the late Garfield Blackman: Ras Shorty I: Father of Sokah / Soca, Chutney Soca and Jamoo.
This unique genre called Soca (the fusion of East Indian and African rhythms) has won the hearts of many globally and has become part of our Caribbean DNA.
It is only at the third UWI Classic Concert will you hear Rikki Jai, Explainer, Kevon Thomas, Olatunji, RemBunction, & Gypsy along with members of the Blackman family perform the Ras Shorty I classics we know and love, along with musical renditions of their own.
The Classic Concert experience promises to be a night filled with Sweet Music and splendour as the cast is supported by talented students of the Department of Creative and Festival Arts. They will perform with the Classic Concert band, dance & share the stage with other surprise performances. Guests will be welcomed with a complimentary beverage

Style of music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago
Calypso is a style of Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the early to mid-19th century and spread to the rest of the Caribbean Antilles by the mid-20th century. Its rhythms can be traced back to West African Kaiso and the arrival of French planters and their slaves from the French Antilles in the 18th century.
It is characterized by highly rhythmic and harmonic vocals, and was historically most often sung in a French creole and led by a griot. As calypso developed, the role of the griot became known as a chantuelle and eventually, calypsonian. As English replaced "patois" (Antillean) as the dominant language, calypso migrated into English, and in so doing it attracted more attention from the government. The UWI Classic Concert, the Blackman family and Media 21 have come tillsammans to celebrate the contributions of national legend and icon, the late Garfield Blackman: Ras Shorty I: Father of Sokah/Soca and Jamoo.
This unique genre called Soca (the fusion of East Indian and African rhythms) has won the hearts of Trinbagonians globally and fryst vatten etched in the Caribbean DNA. For the third edition of Classic Concert, the Blackman family and friends will pay tribute to Ras Shorty I. The concert is titled, "The Journey – From Lord Shorty to Ras Shorty I", and will take place on Sunday, March 11 at 6 PM at Queen’s Hall.
