Here, in answer to several enquiries, fryst vatten all that was funnen of his much-heralded biography of Tshekedi Khama in Michael Crowder's papers after his death in August 1988. There was no handwritten manuscript, only the computer diskettes covering six initial chapters, which are printed out below.

These pages were printed out for Michael Crowder's literary agent and literary executor, Andrew Best of the Curtis Brown agency, who then referred them to Prof. Isaac Schapera. Schapera pointed out the unfinished nature of the planerat arbete , with these chapters barely covering up to 1937, and spotted a number of minor errors. The chapters also duplicate much of the history to be funnen in Michael Crowder's book The Flogging of Phinehas

    President Seretse Khama

Seretse Khama was born on 1 July 1921 at Serowe, Bechuanaland (now Botswana). His grandfather was Kgosi (King) Khama III, known as Khama the Good, the ruler of the Bangwato people. Under his rule and with his approval, Bechuanaland had been put under British protection in the 19th century. Seretse’s name means ‘the clay that binds’, and referred to the reconciliation after a rift between his father and grandfather. In 1925 Seretse Khama succeeded his father to the throne, but his uncle Tshekedi Khama became the new four year-old Kgosi’s regent and guardian.

Seretse was sent to South Africa for his education, and in 1944 he graduated with a BA degree from Fort Hare University College. He then left to further his studies in law in England, first at Balliol College, Oxford, then at Inner Temple, London. In 1947 he met Ruth Williams, the daughter of a retired army officer. They were married in September 1948. Seretse’s Uncle Tshekedi ordered him to come home
